He started his engineering career in 1964 as a technical apprentice at Rubery Owen & Co in Darlaston, at the time the largest privately owned company in the UK, whilst obtaining an HNC in mechanical and production engineering at Wolverhampton Polytechnic. In the design section of Rubery Owen Contracts Division, he covered most aspects of engineering, working on rough terrain forklifts, earth moving equipment and straddle carriers for the dockyard/container handling industry. Eventually he left the company to become a freelance design draughtsman, working on all types of conveyors and materials handling projects, starting at Courtaulds Engineering Ltd. in 1973 on a chemical conveyor for Russia.
In his late twenties he became Technical Director for Moovmoor Engineering in Cradley Heath, where he was responsible for all technical matters relating to design, manufacturing and sales. This company specialised in agricultural machinery for handling bales, potato boxes, silage, sugar beet, timber etc, but relocated to Scotland in 1979, when Maurice decided to start his own company.
Maurice Arnold Equipment Ltd designed and supplied equipment to such household names as JCB, Caterpillar, Coventry Climax and Massey Ferguson. They also supplied over 100 machinery dealers throughout the UK. A highlight for Arnold Equipment was winning a business competition with a unique loader design, and in 1985 they were honoured when HRH The Prince of Wales visited their factory. In June 1987 Maurice decided to sell Arnold Equipment, and he then formed a new company, Dudley Designs and Technical Services.
Under the direction of Maurice Arnold, this company’s success is largely due to the ability and dedication of its workforce over a period of 28 years. Dudley Designs & Technical Services Ltd now employs a total of 30 qualified and experienced engineers carrying out all types of engineering design and drawing work and offering a wide range of technical consultancy services, including design and build. Maurice is a Technician Engineer (CEI) and is a member of the Institute of Agricultural Engineers, the Institute of Logistics and also the Contractors Mechanical Plant Engineers.
When not busy at Dudley Designs, Maurice has a number of interests such as playing bowls, chess, oil painting & writing; he also runs the South Shropshire Blues Club to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
